ANU School of Music Sound Recording & Music Technology Studios

The ANU School of Music is home to the most technologically advanced recording facility in Australia and one of the finest recording studios in the world. Featuring a 9m2 double height, custom acoustically treated recording studio floor with variable wall panelling for flexible acoustic response, our main studio can accommodate large and small ensembles across all musical styles. Our facility also includes an oversized vocal booth designed to accommodate all vocal performance styles as well as isolate guitar amplifiers. At the heart of our Control Room A is a custom made Neve Genesys G96 mixing console, one of the largest custom desks of its kind. As an AVID Learning Partner, the ANU School of Music is always at the cutting edge of music production; we currently run AVID Pro Tools HD 12.7 as our main DAW alongside Steinberg Wavelab and Apple Logic Pro. Our monitoring is DynAudio throughout with an AIR20 Series 5.1 Surround Sound system installed in our main control room. The School recording studio is also home to an unparalleled collection of vintage and contemporary microphones including many Neumann, Schoeps and Blue, as well as an enviable range of gold-standard outboard allowing for perfect recordings across all styles and instruments, solo and ensembles.

Our School’s facilities are consolidated with two custom designed and acoustically treated post production mix suites as well as a cutting-edge, 21-workstation music technology lab.

Videoconferencing and Live streaming production

Over the past 6 years music videoconferencing and livestreaming have been a key initiative for the School of Music, now considered a world leader in the implementation of this technology. The program can facilitate one-on-one lessons, masterclasses, and a variety of music educational opportunities tailored to suit individual and school needs. Additionally, special presentations and workshops are offered for interactive audiences throughout the year, aligning with international festivals, visiting artists and concerts.

The School of Music is equipped with mobile videoconference units for studio teaching, and a videoconference-equipped performance space for large audiences, lectures, ensemble and orchestral workshops. We have recently completed the new state-of-the-art videoconference studio and updated one of our lecture theatres with complimentary technology, placing the school at the cutting edge of music videoconference and distance-learning research.

Some of the past associations include institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music in New York, National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and artists such as Carlo Barone, (Director, Accademia l’Ottocento, Italy) - Elizabeth Wallfisch, (London, UK) - Dr Jonathan Dunsby, (Professor of Music Theory, Eastman School of Music USA), International MiniFiddlers (Helsinki - Finland).

This innovative technology is ever evolving and constantly opening new pathways and learning outcomes for our students.
