Reaching Out Across the Ditch: developing and sustaining a cross-Tasman musical outreach collaboration
This talk presents aspects of a research collaboration between ANU, NZ's Southern Institute of Technology and the school system of the Southland Region. The ANU Music Engagement Program has developed a model for music making that embraces schools and the broader community through a particular form of social-altruistic musical sharing. The aim of this collaboration, initiated by Sally Bodkin-Allen from SIT in partnership with Sarah Lovell, a Dunedin musician and teacher, is to explore the application of this model in a different environment. The model uses a form of Educational Design Research which prioritises up-scaling and transportability across different jurisdictions. The NZ team has used both the practice and the research of the ACT-based Program to fast-track development in their region. The talk will describe the basics of the program and its rollout in NZ, current progress, and the development of the joint research paradigm.
