Friends of the School of Music
The Friends of the School of Music is a non-profit association which aims to be a source of practical and financial support to staff and students of the ANU School of Music thus to advance musical endeavours within the School and flow on benefit to the Canberra community.
We assist the School's pre-tertiary program by organizing concerts to enable our young musicians to present their talents in public performances. We fund prizes to undergraduate students for musical performance and academic achievement. We provide ad hoc grants to students for projects adding substance to their musical experience. We offer a Friends Transition Award open to recent graduates to assist in the transition from formal study to a professional career in music. We provide travelling fellowships to staff in furthering their professional development.
We raise money through concerts, donations and membership fees. Staff, students and alumni of the School donate performances of fine music to paying audiences recruited by the Friends. We share an investment with the ANU in the Friends Endowment Project Fund (within the university's Endowment for Excellence) and provide advice on the projects to which income from the fund is directed. In 2011 a bequest enabled us to establish a second endowment fund, the Christel Larko Music Scholarship endowment, which will fund voice and keyboard scholarships.
Membership of the Friends brings entitlement to generous concessions to School concerts and School Library membership; there are opportunities to meet students and staff and to become involved in the life of the School. In this way we advance the cause of musical education and appreciation in Canberra.
What we have achieved.
