In 2015-16 Kim Cunio worked with Manisha Sharma, Indo / US women’s studies academic and writer to produce an auditory artistic practice work informed by scholastic research into the subject of female foeticide in India. The work took the form of an artistic and sound installation, hung in the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, the Connie Dietzschold Gallery in Sydney, before being remade for broadcast with Radio National. This emergent collaboration follows on from previous experiments into the act of bearing witness as part of the composition process, and asks the question whether artists and composers in the tertiary music sphere can play a part in a more radical definition of artistic practice, one that is part of social justice and living activism. Further the project asks whether the simple act of raising consciousness about a difficult subject is enough, whether new art can sit comfortably in the social justice movement of today, and how might this be replicated and built upon. This presentation will conclude with a listening session.
