School of Music Welcomes Professor Malcolm Gillies AM

Wednesday 27 July 2016

The School of Music heartily welcomes Professor Malcolm Gillies AM into the position of Interim Head of School for a period of six months commencing in October this year.

Professor Gillies will be returning to the University to support the School of Music as the School and ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences finalise the outcomes of the community consultation and complete the appointment of a permanent head. At the close of Professor Gillies’ appointment, the School will welcome him into the role of mentor and advisor for both the new Head of School, and the broader life of the School of Music.

Professor Gillies has holds a long running and active relationship with the School of Music, having begun his studies at the School as an 11-year-old violin student at Canberra School of Music in 1966.  He studied violin at the School when he was a child, under esteemed teacher Vincent Edwards and knew founding Director Ernest Llewellyn. During his time at the School, Professor Gillies led the Canberra Youth Orchestra and played with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. More recently, Professor Gillies delivered a guest lecture at the School concerning the value that music criticism, and the humanistic disciplines that underpin it, brings to both scholarship and to society.

In her email to staff and students announcing the appointment, Acting Vice Chancellor Margaret Harding gave particular thanks to Dr Royston Gustavson for outstanding leadership of the school during 2015 and 2016. In her statement she added,

“[Dr. Gustavson] has helped recruit talented new academics to the school, organised the school’s academic structures and reshaped the courses on offer to students.”

The School is deeply grateful for Dr. Gustavson’s support. He will return to his fulltime role as the Associate Dean (Education) of the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
