Andrew Quinn, the mastermind behind the virtual LED set for the School of Music’s 2014 production of L’Orfeo, is running a weeklong workshop bringing together students and faculty from the Schools of Computer Science, Art and Music. These students will be designing collaborative, interactive installations using TouchDesigner software, and presenting these works in an informal event in the School of Music Big Band Room.
About the artist
Andrew Quinn is an Australian computer graphics artist and musician, living in Milan. He has worked on digital effects for films such as “The Matrix”, “Tomb Raider, ”, “Dark City”, “Nirvana” and “Vajont”. In the last few years he specializes in video installations for multi screen and immersive environments and also digital graphics for interactive dance productions and contemporary music, including the series Koine’ for Pommeriggi Musicale at Teatro Del Verme, Milano in 2011 and the 2012 Biennale of Music in Venice. In 2011 he created 3d stereoscopic virtual sets for a prodution of Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle” for the Hungarian State Opera produced by Francesco Stocchino Weiss.
In 2014 he created sound reactive visuals for performances of Debussy’s “Children’s Corner” and “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky and also performed sound reactive visuals in Moscow with Alex Nazhardov of the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium of Music. In august of the same year he creates digital sets for “L’Orfeo” by Monteverdi at Lewellyn Hall Canberra, and in September created content for a video mapping performance where laser scanning techniques were used to model a traditional set. In December he performed live visuals for a tour of Russia with music by 3 young contemporary composers from the Moscow Conservatory. In april 2015 he created an interactive installation for Metragramma studios in via Tortona for the Salone dei Mobili, also in january visuals for “Pictures at an Exhibitio”, progressive rock version led by Enrico Gabrielli.
He has published papers for the ASC (Australian Society of Computing) and has been interviewed for various online journals, including Backstage Magazine and the Music Biennale of Venice, 2012.
