National Volunteer Week Give Happy face

Congratulations to the Music Engagement Program of the ANU School of Music’s Outreach Program who were winners in the Arts and Environment Team Category at the 2015 ACT Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The ACT Volunteer of the Year Awards are an opportunity to highlight the generous contributions that volunteers make across all areas of our community. The Awards were took place at a ceremony on May 14 and is an annual event held each year during National Volunteer Week.

Nominated by the Sir Leslie Morshead Manor, a care facility in Lyneham where the members of the Music Engagement Program provide regular musical therapy for elderly residents, they also sing on special occasions, such as at Christmas, Anzac Day and Remembrance Day as well as provide musical therapy in other care facilities around Canberra. The team brings extreme joy and happiness to the residents, reminiscing as they sing songs together, often while holding hands. Through these experiences each participant becomes a music maker regardless of age, ability or skill level. The nomination tells of the team singing at a resident’s bedside as he was dying and then at his funeral, for which the family was so thankful. The team have, ‘incredible hearts and show such kindness to everyone.’
