Music from the past can sound quite different when played on instruments comparable to those for which it was written.  The ANU School of Music is fortunate to hold a superb collection, unrivalled in Australasia, of historical keyboard instruments – both original period instruments and excellent modern replicas.  This concert will celebrate the School’s collection with a program ranging from Baroque to early 20th-century music, on selected instruments from a clavichord and harpsichord to early and modern pianos. Student and staff performers will illustrate the instruments’ individual characters and give performances, solo, four-hands, and with voice, of repertoire likely to include music of Corelli, J.S. and C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, the Romantic virtuoso Henselt, and Ravel.

The concert will also be an occasion to welcome newest recruit to the School’s musical staff, Dr Erin Helyard, co-director of Pinchgut Opera and director of Hobart Baroque, who will play a prominent part in the concert.

This concert is organized jointly by the School and the Friends, and proceeds will be used to continue the Friends’ program of supporting ANU music students through their small grants scheme.
