Marcia Ruff Hewitt Jazz and Contemporary Music Prize 2015

The ANU School of Music launched the Marcia Ruff Hewitt Jazz and Contemporary Music Prize in 2014 to encourage the composition and presentation of new works for Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Large Ensemble and by a singer songwriter.

 

Prizes:

  • Best Composition and presentation of a new work for Jazz Vocal Ensemble: $1,000
  • Best Composition and presentation of a new work for Large Ensemble: $1,000
  • Best Composition and presentation of a new work by a singer songwriter $500

 

Conditions of Award

To be eligible for award, the entrant must have written the new work for submission within the preceding 12 months, and must be a current School of Music student studying at the undergraduate, honours or masters level.

At the time of application, entrants must submit both a full score of the composition (in the singer songwriter category, a fully notated piano/vocal songbook chart or leadsheet is acceptable) and a recording of the composition. A recording can be either:

  • An audio file of  a live performance of the composition or
  • An audio file of the composition from a notation software program

 

Entries must be received by: Monday, 12 October 2015

Winners in each category will be notified by: Wednesday, 14 October 2015

Performance of the winning compositions will take place on Thursday, 29 October 2015.

 

Entry Guidelines

New work for Jazz Vocal Ensemble

  • Composition must be at least 3 vocal lines, and may be scored for female, male or mixed voices
  • The composition should be no more than 15 minutes in length
  • A full score and recording must be submitted at the time of application

 

New work for Large Ensemble

  • The composition must be scored for at least:
    • Rhythm section: piano and/or guitar, bass and drums
    • Front line of at least 3 horns
    • Vocals are optional
  • The composition should be no longer than 15 minutes in length
  • A full score and recording must be submitted at the time of application

 

New work by a singer songwriter

  • The new work must be written and performed by the entrant an include melody line and accompaniment
  • A fully notated piano/vocal songbook chart or leadsheet and recording  must be submitted for the judging panel
