Leonard Weiss and Lights! Canberra! Action! award

Leonard Weiss, a recent ANU BMus graduate, has been awarded the Mix 106.3 Award for Best Original Music in the Lights! Canberra! Action! 2014 short film festival. Weiss composed the musical score to The Machine which was premiered at the festival finalists Top 12 and Awards Ceremony on Friday 7 March 2014, as part of Enlighten in Canberra.

Weiss’s score was written and recorded within a manner of days, working around the 10-day filming and editing deadline for the competition. He was privileged to be able to conduct and record the score with renown composer and performer from The Australian National University, Dr Calvin Bowman, on piano, Jocelyn James on violin, and Joshua Healey on cello.

In 2013, Weiss was awarded the ANU Harold Wesley Allen memorial prize for composition. Weiss’s previous composition history includes Three Reflections (in progress) commissioned by the National Capital Authority for the World Carillon Federation in 2014, in commemoration of WWI; Six-String Suite commissioned by the Canberra Classical Guitar Society in 2013; Awarded First Place and the Canberra Audience Choice Prize for The Bells of Nyx in the inaugural National Carillon Composition Competition 2011; as well as multiple arrangements and orchestrations for the CGS Music Department.

The Machine was also awarded the EoR Media award for Best Art Direction and the Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art award for Best Acting Performance, making it the second-most awarded film in the 2014 festival.

Weiss is continuing his studies this year with a Masters in Teaching, while pursuing multiple musical commitments. Weiss performs with the Canberra Youth Orchestra on harp and French horn, as well as performing on piano, voice, and percussion in other ensembles. He is the Assistant Conductor of the National Capital Orchestra, Assistant Director/Conductor of the Maruki Community Orchestra, Director/Conductor of the Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire, Choral Director/Conductor at Merici College, Director/Conductor of the Echo Voices Community Choir, Director/Conductor of the National Gallery of Australia Singers, and Director/Conductor of the Musica da Camera String Orchestra for their first concert series each year.
