Penelope Thwaites

Abstract: The unusual range of Grainger’s compositions and musical inspiration has often been obscured by the popularity of a handful of his “hits”.  For well over 30 years pianist and editor Penelope Thwaites has researched and performed his compelling music, its colour and variety reflected in recordings ranging from the Chandos 19-CD Grainger Edition to recordings by Simon Rattle and John Eliot Gardiner. As her lecture unfolds, with its recorded examples, Grainger’s unique voice in Australian and world music becomes clear.

Concert pianist, composer, recording artist and editor, Penelope Thwaites AM, presents an Illustrated Lecture on the music of Australian composer, Percy Grainger (1882 - 1961).  She was the Artistic Director of London't first international Grainger Event, the editor of The New Percy Grainger Companion (Boydell & Brewer 2010) and instigated the first complete recording of Grainger's works - Chandos Records' 25 CD Grainger Edition.

Tickets available for pre-purchase now:
