Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize Winners

Friday 8 November 2013

A hearty congratulations to our prize winners of the 2013 Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize.

The Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize encourages the art of accompaniment at the ANU School of Music. This annual award is in memory of Margaret Smiles, honouring her dedication and contribution to Canberra’s musical life. Margaret was the repetiteur for The Llewellyn Choir  (The School of Music Community Choir as it was originally known) from its inception until her untimetly death at an early age.

Congratulations to Aaron Chew, awarded the Most Oustanding Accompanist

"I am honored and humbled to receive the Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize 2013. The competition has provided me the inspiration and motivation to do collaborative work with my fellow musicians. I thank the Smiles family for their generosity and support in encouraging the art of accompaniment at the ANU School of Music over the years"

The Choir, in collaboration with the Smiles family, raised the capital from which the Margaret Smiles Prize is drawn, through donations in memory of a much loved person. Since then the Choir has been proud to support this wonderful competition, both by its members attending the event and by providing the prizes for the best instrumentalist and vocalist from its own public fund. This fund enables the Choir to meet one of its principal objectives, which is to give financial support for performances by young musicians.

Congratulations to Nicholas Beecher, awarded the Most Outstanding Vocalist and Joseph Eisinger, awarded the Most Outstanding Instrumentalist

Thank you to the Smiles family for their ongoing support of this important award, to our convenor Calvin Bowman, and to our panel Peter Tregear, Virginia Taylor and Maciej Pawela.

The date for the 2014 Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize has been set for Friday 24 October, 2014.
