Vista Needle is the brainchild of drummer Daniel Susnjar and Sydney pianist Steve Barry. Drawing on the broad gallimaufry of 20th century classical music, Vista Needle brings about a collision of improvisation and composition, utilizing the music of Paul Hindemith, Federico Mompou and Bela Bartok, among others, as catalysts for creative reinterpretation and re-composition.

Vista Needle draws equally on Susnjar and Barry’s original music and their respective PhD studies at the University of Miami and the Sydney Conservatorium, as well as their travels and performance experience across the USA, Europe, Asia and India. In keeping with the project’s eclectic influences, Susnjar (recipient of the 2015 Bell Awards for Modern Jazz Album and Song of the Year) recently performed with jazz/rock legends Chick Corea, Steve Miller and Phil Ramone in the USA, while Barry (2013 Bell Award for Young Jazz Artist of the Year) continues to develop a deepening relationship with the Japanese traditional music community through the cross-cultural platform Orbiturtle.

Joined by National Jazz Award finalist and bassist Thomas Botting, Vista Needle explore a vortex of lyrical melody and rhythmic diversity, juxtaposed against a fluctuating harmonic backdrop.
