A new vision for Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo'

To mark its premiere, conductor Peter Tregear will discuss his vision for the ANU School of Music’s groundbreaking production of the opera, L’Orfeo (1607), by Claudio Monteverdi. Based on Greek legend, L'Orfeo recounts the story of Orpheus, his extraordinary love for Eurydice, and his descent into Hades in an attempt to rescue her. Directed by Cate Clelland, the production uses a specially-commissioned digital set designed by Milan-based award-winning Australian digital artist, Andrew Quinn, with lighting design by Alessandro Chiodo. Performed in English using wonderfully lyrical translation by Anne Ridler, its cast of ANU students, staff and visitors is led by rising international tenor, Nicholas Mulroy, in the title role, and includes Paul McMahon (Apollo), Rachael Thoms (La Musica) and Krystle Innes (Messenger). They are expertly accompanied by a period orchestra led by Rachael Beesley (Violin) with Erin Helyard (Harpsichord), Tommie Andersson (Theorbo) and Matthew Manchester (Cornetto).

ANU’s production of L'Orfeo opens in Llewellyn Hall at 7.30 pm on Thursday, 21 August 2014, with a repeat performance at 7.30 pm on Friday, 22 August 2014.
