We are delighted that Edward and Stephanie Neeman have agreed to host the next Historical Instruments Concert on Friday August 5, 2016 at 7:30pm on the Llewellyn Hall Stage. They will be performing the following program on the Stein, Graf and Erard pianos.

Mozart: Sonata in C major, K 279

Schubert: Fantasie in F minor, D 940

=== INTERMISSION ====

Mendelssohn: Fantasie in F sharp minor, Op. 28

Chopin: Mazurkas (selections)

Liszt: Polonaise No. 2 in E major

Here are their notes introducing the program:

The 19th century saw the transformation of the piano from a chamber instrument into a powerful, iron-framed beast that could dominate a large concert hall and cut through a sizeable orchestra. This program begins with refined works by Mozart and Schubert, written for smaller rooms and select audiences. In the second half, the extrovert, bravura style of Mendelssohn and Liszt requires more powerful instruments. Mendelssohn's early Fantasie, Op. 28 owes a good deal to the piano writing of his idol Beethoven. Chopin brought the strains of Polish national music to the attention of his Parisian public with his masterful polonaises and mazurkas. Liszt's polonaises were written in homage to Chopin following his friend's death in 1849. They mix extrovert virtuosity with Chopin's more intimate lyricism.
