Friends of the School of Music Transition Award 2014 guidelines for applicants

Timeframe

A notice calling for applications will be posted on the Friends’ website in November each year. Applications will close at the end of the following March or thereabouts. The closing date for applications in 2014 is Monday 31st March 2014.

Eligibility

Persons who have completed the requirements for the award of Honours, Masters or Doctoral degree at the School of Music are all eligible.

A person who is currently a post-graduate student is eligible provided that they have completed the requirements for one of the foregoing degrees at the School of Music.

The dates within which a person must have completed the relevant requirements are between 31 March 2012 and 31 March 2014. Applicants should include a copy of their academic record. (see Section 4 of the Conditions of the Award).

Purpose of the Award

The award is to assist in the transition to a professional music career. The Friends are not prescriptive as to what would constitute a “professional music career” and would welcome innovative proposals. The key requirement is that applicants describe the music career for which they are aiming, and can demonstrate that their proposed transition activities are effectively directed to assisting in their transition.

Criteria

Academic results will be a factor considered in selection, and applicants should give information on their final year results e.g. distinctions or credits gained, Class of Honours etc.

Quality of the proposed transition activities: the selection committee will assess how well the proposed activities are directed to the objective of making a transition to a professional music career. For this purpose they will have regard to referee comment and may seek advice from other professional music experts.

Thoroughness of planning: the selection committee will look for evidence of thorough preparation e.g. guidance received from musical organisations, teachers, supervisors, leading musicians in relevant fields; evidence of acceptance into tuition, or certainty of proposed performance experience.

Soundness of budget submitted: the selection committee will assess the comprehensiveness and rigour of the proposed budget. Applicants should provide documentation which supports their budget (e.g. evidence of travel, accommodation, tuition costs or costs of other proposed purchases.)

  5. Proposed transition activities including timeframe for activities (provide supporting material where relevant e.g. evidence of Acceptance into tuition, bookings for concerts)
  6. Budget (include documentation where relevant eg cost of airfares, Accommodation, tuition, recording expenses)
  7. Names and contact details of 2 referees (referees should be people who can comment on the value of the proposed transition activities to a professional career)
