Open School of Music

The aim of the Open School of Music is to foster a love and life-long learning experience in music. Our integrated and dynamic program runs sequentially from early childhood classes through to university entrance.

Throughout, there is the possibility for students to work at a variety of different levels depending on their interests and skills.

Our program is very much a creative laboratory where students are encouraged to question and to be creative – at all times guided by our experienced and inspiring artist teachers.

The program offers aspiring musicians of the future a totally supportive and nurturing social environment in which they can interact with their peers and rub shoulders with the world of professional music-making.

Supported by the ACT Government.

Auditions

Students are carefully selected through a process of auditions and interviews which varies according to the age and the musical training of the applicants.

Young children, and those with no formal musical training, are asked to listen to and sing back different pitches, imitate a clapped rhythm and sing a tune. For children with some musical background, their level of development is assessed in relation to the length of time they have been learning the instrument. Applicants may be asked to prepare two contrasting pieces and to play scales and sight-read a short section.

At the conclusion of the audition, staff will interview the applicants to gauge the extent of their interest and enthusiasm for music.

Successful applicants enrol for one semester at a time and re-enrolment is subject to satisfactory attendance and progress as determined by the relevant area.

Open School Of Music Scholarships

The ANU School of Music offers scholarships for instrumental tuition in the Single Studies program. These scholarships are generously funded by University House.

The Scholarships will partially cover the tuition fee for two semesters, or any variation to this, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Music. All scholarships are awarded for one year only and students are eligible to hold only one scholarship in any year.

Students should indicate their desire to be considered for a scholarship by ticking the relevant box on the Open School of Music application form. Existing students wishing to be considered for a scholarship will need to complete the application form below.

Applicants must meet the following age requirements as of 1 January of the year in which the scholarship is tenable, to be eligible for the award of a Scholarship in that year:

  • All instruments except voice, under the age of 17.
  • Voice applicants. Females 18-21 and males 18-22.

A student awarded a Scholarship who is under the age of 18 must have his or her acceptance signed by a parent or guardian. The families of staff at the School of Music are not eligible to apply for the Scholarships.

Instrument Hire

It is expected that children will have their own instruments. The School of Music does, however, have a limited number of small sized violins and cellos for hire. Contact the Library on 6125 5794 for more information.

The Young Music Society also has some instruments for hire during term time and can be
contacted directly on 6161 3782.

Access To Resources

All Open School of Music students may apply for a student card, which entitles them to:

  • Borrowing rights at the School’s comprehensive specialist music library;
  •  Free admission to public master classes presented as part of the School of Music education program, advertised at the School and in the local press;
  • Public concert performance opportunities at the end of each semester or as arranged through their program of study.

Student Progress

The musical development and technical progress of individual students is of utmost importance to the staff.

Depending on the area, student progress is monitored in a variety of ways. These include the weekly lessons, regular individual performances and technical assessments. Instrumental students are encouraged to develop confidence and enjoyment in performing.

Supervision

The University’s policy on “Children within the Workplace” states that “in instances where a child or adolescent person is brought to the workplace by their parent or other adult, the de facto supervisor is the parent or other adult. This is an important part of minimizing the risk to the child and every effort should be made by his/her supervisor to maintain control of the child’s behaviour and location while on campus to minimise risk to the safety or health of the child.

The University cannot provide child-minding arrangements for students. Students visiting the School of Music must be properly supervised before and after their classes. Students should arrive at their designated music room at the scheduled start time of their class and be collected immediately after the scheduled finish time. Students and supervisors should also remain aware that the School of Music is an educational institution where students and teachers are undertaking serious study, and ensure students behave appropriately.

Refund Policy

Students are enrolled on a school semester basis. Lessons will be spread as evenly as possible, with teachers and students liaising to reach a suitable agreement as to when those lessons will be held.
Refunds will be considered in exceptional circumstances, such as:
