Congratulations to Dr Susan West on receiving the prestigious ANU Vice Chancellor's Award for Community Outreach! This award recognises the excellence and dedication Susan has brought to her role as Convenor of the innovative Music Education Program at the ANU School of Music. The award will be presented by the Vice Chancellor Ian Chubb on the 12th November in the Great Hall, University House.
As part of Floriade 2009, the ANU School of Music presented Rhythm ’n’ Blooms – a lunchtime concert series on Stage 88, most weekdays during Floriade at 12.30pm. This was a comprehensive program of events showcasing the talented staff and students from the School, from jazz to classical, from solos to ensembles.

Reinventing Tradition: Pathways to Innovation in Music Research: The Graduate Symposium is planned and run annually by a committee of ANU School of Music postgraduate research students. The primary aim of the symposium is to provide postgraduate music research students with an opportunity to demonstrate their research and findings in a formal manner. However, staff members are also invited to share their research as part of the symposium.
THE DRUMatiX PERCUSSION GROUP, resident percussion ensemble at the Australian National University School of Music, will be embarking on their 2009 South Coast NSW Concert Tour this Friday 11th – 14th September. Comprised of percussion students studying at the ANU, DRUMatix is an ensemble dedicated to presenting the rich and diverse repertoire written exclusively for percussion.
The Bachelor of Professional Music Practice is a new and innovative three-year undergraduate program designed for students wishing to study music and enter into a music-related career but who do not aspire to become elite performers.
Students of the Professional Music Practice degree will have the opportunity to be trained across the diverse areas of the music industry for careers in studio teaching, arts administration, festival and event management, community music administration, sound design and a wide range of other music-related careers.
Dr Ruth Lee Martin has won a 2009 Creative Fellowship from ArtsACT. The grant will fund six-months of vocal composition later this year. Dr Martin researches traditional music, with a particular focus on Gaelic songs.
Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise , in association with the ANU School of Music, Melbourne Opera, and the Embassy of Italy, will present the Italian Opera Gala concert on Saturday 9 May 2009 at Llewellyn Hall to raise funds to support students at the ANU School of Music and also to support Rotary's wide range of youth programs.
Many congratulations are due to our new Head of School of Music, Professor Adrian Walter who has become a Member of the Order of Australia (AM): For service to the arts, particularly in the area of classical guitar performance and musical composition through the Darwin International Guitar Festival, to music education and as a supporter of emerging performers.
The School of Music recognises the enormous contribution made by Professor Peter Karmel over the years he was Chair firstly of the Canberra Institute of the Arts and then the National Institute of the Arts, and the many other ways in which he enriched the life of the School.
